Brooks, Dixon Prevent Another Northeastern Upset of PC.  Rhody Up Next.

Thursday, December 02, 2010

In their final tune-up before Saturday’s show down with intra state rival URI, the PC Friars shook off some early jitters and rallied to beat Northeastern 77-72 at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center.

The Friars dug themselves an early hole falling behind the Huskies 11-2 less than 3 minutes into the game. Their largest deficit of the game was 11 which occurred on more than one occasion in the first half.

Down 31-20 with 8 minutes remaining in the first half, the Friars started their comeback with a 15-6 run to close out the half putting them down by only two, 37-35 at the break.

A Kadeem Batts bucket at the 17:45 mark of the second half gave the Friars their first lead of the game at 41-39 but it was short-lived. Northeastern went on a 10-2 run to jump back ahead 49-43 with just under 15 minutes to play.

But PC fought back again led by senior Marshon Brooks. The Friars leading scorer scored 18 of his game-high 27 points in the final 15 minutes of the game to lead Providence to the 77-72 win.

Vincent Council finished with 15 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists while Bilal Dixon registered a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Dixon was also a defensive force down low for Providence with 5 blocks on the night.

With the victory, the Friars improved to (7-1) on the season and a perfect (5-0) at home.

The stage is now set for Saturday afternoon’s showdown with the Rhody Rams at the Dunk. (4pm)  According to PC, about 1,500 tickets are still available for that game.  They can be purchased by going to friars.com, the Dunkin Donuts box office, the PC ticket office or by calling 401-865-GOPC.
