Brooks Shines In Loss at Georgetown

Sunday, February 06, 2011

Marshon Brooks did something on Saturday that no other player has done in the Big East this season. The PC Friars senior scored a league-high 43 points but it wasn’t enough to lift the Friars to an upset over 14th-ranked Georgetown. The Hoyas held off Providence 83-81.

Brooks was unstoppable hitting 17 of his 28 shots while also pulling down 10 rebounds. His 43 points are a new career-high. He’s the first Friar to eclipse 40 points in a game since Eric Murdock did it in 1991.

With less than half of the conference season still to play, Brooks has clearly established himself as a first-team All Big East player and a contender for player of the year in the conference as well. Traditionally, those honors usually go to players on the league’s top teams but Brooks has clearly established himself as an exception to that rule. Barring a late season collapse by Brooks statistically, it would be criminal for Big East coaches to not name the Friars forward to the first team.

Duke Mondy was the only other Friar to provide offensive support adding 19 points and 6 rebounds.

The Hoyas had 4 players in double figures led by Austin Freeman’s 23 points. Jason Clark had 18, Chris Wright 16 and Julian Vaughn 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Hoyas who led by as many as 18 points and never trailed in the game.

Georgetown improved to (18-5, 7-4 Big East) with the win. The loss dropped the Friars to (14-10, 3-8 Big East). PC also remains winless on the road dropping to (0-7) on the season.

Providence has a week to prepare for their next game which is also on the road. PC visits #6 UConn in Storrs next Sunday.
