Brown’s Heart is Broken in NH

Sunday, November 28, 2010

Brown Men's Basketball almost had it - a nice win on the road versus a solid New Hampshire team. But a lay-up by NH senior Dale DiLiegro with 2.8 seconds broke the Bear's back. Senior DiLiegro scored a game high 23 points and broke a 66-66 tie and give New Hampshire a 70-66 win over Brown in a non-league game at Lundholm Gymnasium when he went end-to-end. Brown was led by Peter Sullivan scored 20 points.

Brown, which had been off to one of its best stops ever dropped to 3-2 on the season.

The Bears had come back from a 10-point halftime deficit, and tied the game, 60-60, with 2:13 remaining when Sullivan hit two free throws.

They then slipped ahead when Sean McGonagill hit one of two free throws to grab a 61-60 advantage with 1:40 left in the game.

Tucker Halpern of Brown tied the game 66-66, by connecting on two free throws with 8.1 seconds left on the clock. Then the nightmare, New Hampshire guard Chandler Rhodes drove the length of the court and feed DiLiegro under the basket for the game-winning lay-up with just 2.8 left on the clock. The Bears then fouled which led to the four point margin.

New Hampshire is now 4-1 after the win.

Sullivan moved into 18th place on Brown’s all-time scoring list with 1,114 career points, moving past Mark McAndrew, who scored 1,100 points for the Bears from 2004-2008. Sullivan also had a career high four steals, and a team high eight rebounds.

Halpern had 15 points, while adding five rebounds. Senior Garret Leffelman also was in double-digits with 12 points for Brown.

The Bears travel to Hartford, CT, on Thursday, December 2, to face the University of Hartford, for its second of six games against Connecticut schools. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
