Brown’s McGonagill Named Ivy Lg Rookie of the Year
Thursday, March 10, 2011
Brown freshman point guard Sean McGonagill was named the Ivy League’s Rookie of the Year on Wednesday. McGonagill was a unanimous choice among the league’s coaches for the award.
McGonagill, who played great all season, saved his best for Ivy League play. He averaged 14.6 points per game which ranked 4th in league games. His 5.7 assists per game ranked third in league play while his 4.9 rebounds per game placed him 11th in the league.
McGonagill also dished out 147 assists which is a freshman record at Brown and the third highest single-season total in the program’s history.
The Brookfield, Illinois native’s highlight of the season came at home against Columbia when he poured in a career-best 39 points against the Lions. His spectacular performance in that game came just 48 hours after he suffered a serious laceration to his upper lip which required more than 20 stitches to close. It also required him to wear a protective mask which he wore for the final 10 games of the season.
McGonagill was not named to the First or Second All-Ivy Teams but his teammate Tucker Halpern received Honorable Mention honors.
Halpern, a sophomore, was also at his best in Ivy games finishing 8th in league games at 14.3 points per contest. He also averaged 4.4 rebounds (18th) and 2.7 assists (10th) in league play.
The two players are part of a nucleus of young players who are hoping to take Brown basketball to the top of the Ivy League standings over the next couple of years.
