Bulldogs fall short in overtime again

Friday, January 28, 2011

Among other things, the Bulldogs have proven they’ll be entertaining to watch down the stretch.

Another late rally sent Bryant University to its second consecutive overtime finish Thursday, but – much like the last one – the Bulldogs fell short in an 80-75 loss to Wagner at the Chace Athletic Center.

The Bulldogs (6-15, 4-5 Northeast Conference) erased a five-point deficit in the closing minutes and sent the game into overtime when Cecil Gresham hit a 3-pointer with 19 seconds remaining. Wagner (10-10, 6-3 NEC) stemmed the tide with a 7-2 run to open the extra period, sending the Bulldogs to their second consecutive loss. On Saturday, Raphael Jordan hit a three with 5.5 seconds remaining to force overtime against Monmouth – a game the Bulldogs eventually lost, 81-76.

Trailing early in overtime Thursday, Bryant closed to within two points of Wagner with 1:28 remaining, but the Seahawks hit their free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Latif Rivers finished with a team-high 16 points for Wagner, which shot 49 percent from the field.

Gresham led the Bulldogs with 18 points while freshman Alex Francis finished with 16 points and eight rebounds. Frankie Dobbs added 12 points and Jordan and Corey Maynard finished with 10 apiece. Bryant will host Mount St. Mary’s on Saturday at 4 p.m.
