Bulldogs streak ends in heartbreaker

Sunday, January 23, 2011

At least they didn’t go down without a fight.

Monmouth stormed back Saturday against Bryant University, withstood a game-tying 3-pointer at the end of regulation and held on in overtime for a hard-fought 81-76 win at the Chace Athletic Center.

Jesse Steele finished with 19 points as Monmouth (6-14, 2-6 Northeast Conference) snapped Bryant’s four-game winning streak -- the longest win streak in its brief Division I history.

The Bulldogs (6-14, 4-4 NEC) hit a school-record 17 3-pointers Saturday and led by seven points with eight minutes to go before the Hawks fought back.

Mike Myers Keitt’s 3-pointer with four minutes remaining gave Monmouth a 67-61 lead, but Bryant responded with a run of its own. After a pair of free throws by Myers Keitt put the Hawks back on top by three, Raphael Jordan hit a three from the corner with 5.5 seconds to go to send the game into overtime.

The Bulldogs actually led briefly in overtime, but a three by Steele and four free throws from Ed Waite in the closing seconds sealed the win for Monmouth.

Cecil Gresham and Matthew Lee each scored 26 points for Bryant. The Bulldogs will return Thursday at home at 7 p.m. against Wagner.
