Central MA Top 10: High School Football Performances

Monday, October 07, 2013

In case you missed the big plays, the big games or the top performances of the week around Central Massachusetts high school football...don't worry.

We've got you covered.

Beginning this week - and running through the remainder of the prep football season - every Monday GoLocalWorcester will wrap up the superlative performances from the weekend on the gridiron in our communities.  Power rankings for football (and for boys and girls soccer) will follow.  Want to nominate a performance, or a team for their standout play?  Make sure you comment below!

10

Neil O'Connor - Leominster: 34-0 win over Wachusett

O'Connor was a key part of the Blue Devil's victory on Friday, scoring on both offense and defense. His first score came on a 56-yard rush early in the first quarter to give Leominster the lead for good. He later intercepted a pass and returned it for a 90-yard touchdown to cap the scoring.

9

Koby Schofer - Northbridge: 28-0 win over Lunenburg

Schofer led an impressive Rams attack, finishing the night completing 12 of 19 passes and two touchdowns, to Robie Sabourin and Christian Polymeros respectively. Schofer also got it done with his legs as he ran the ball nine times for 113 yards and a touchdown to account for 21 of the 28 Northbridge points.

8

Alex McLaughin - Littleton: 40-20 win over Narragansett

McLaughin took charge of the Littleton rushing attack, finishing the night with 205 yards and two touchdowns on just 11 carries. He also threw for another touchdown to teammate Travis Bassett, who is featured further up in our list.

7

Zehmir Brown - Burncoat: 22-6 win over Worcester North

Brown turned in one of the more impressive defensive efforts of the season on Friday night as he helped lead Burncoat to a win. Burncoat's defensive front had a great night, registering six sacks, and Brown was responsible for four of those sacks with Liam Crowley grabbing the other two. Brown also forced and recovered a fumble that led to a Chris Ladou touchdown pass.

6

Travis Bassett - Littleton: 40-20 win over Narragansett

Bassett showed his prowess as a power back on Friday, rushing for 66 yards and three touchdowns on just eight carries. He was also able to find himself on the receiving end of a 41-yard Alex McLaughin touchdown pass early in the first half to put the Tigers on top for good.

5

Chris Chabot - Quabbin: 40-34 win over Oakmont

Chabot was the favorite target of Dylan Kierman on Friday night. He found himself on the receiving end of 14 Kierman passes for 229 yards and a touchdown. Chabot showed his deep-play ability, finishing with an average of over 16 yards per-catch, including his 48 yard touchdown in the third quarter.

4

Quintin Forbes - Groton Dunstable: 26-7 win over North Middlesex

Forbes did not have to throw many times from his quarterback position to help lead the Crusaders to victory. Forbes completed 5 of 10 passes for 103 yards and a touchdown but did most of his damage with his legs. He ran for 129 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries.

3

Justin Coppolino - Quabbin: 40-34 win over Oakmont

As impressive as Chris Chabot was for the Panthers, he was out dueled by fellow receiver Justin Coppolino. Coppolino finished his night with seven receptions for 150 yards and two touchdown to help lead Quabbin to victory. His amazing 21.4 yards per catch average kept the home crowd on its feet all night.

2

Shane Combs - St. Johns (Shrewsbury): 49-21 win over Nashoba

There is something to be said about players who "show up" in the biggest games, on Friday Combs did just that. Combs ran for four touchdowns in the Pioneers huge win, ending Nashoba's 29 game winning streak. Combs scored from three, nine, one and five yards out but that was more that potent enough to down Nashoba on Friday.

1

Dylan Kierman - Quabbin: 40-34 win over Oakmont

In an early candidate for performance of the year, Dylan Kierman of Quabbin turned in an record-breaking night. Kierman was 31-44 for a Central Massachusetts record 456 yards while adding five touchdowns and the game-winning five-yard touchdown run in overtime. Kierman threw his touchdown passes to four different receivers with Justin Coppolino being the lucky man to catch two touchdowns. In what could have been the biggest game of the year for Quabbin, their quarterback turned in a game for the ages.
