Cordischi: Where is Marshon Brooks Going in Tonight’s NBA Draft
Thursday, June 23, 2011
About the only certainty Thursday night is that Duke’s Kyrie Irving will go #1 overall to whoever holds that pick. At the moment, it’s the Cleveland Cavaliers.
We all know by now what a sensational individual offensive season Brooks had at Providence College. He finished the season averaging 24.6 points per game which was the second highest scoring average in the country behind BYU’s Jimmer Fredette’s 28.5 points per game.
Throughout most of the season, most NBA scouts had Brooks tabbed as a second round pick. However, that has changed over the last couple of months after Brooks’ individual workouts with NBA teams.
Many are enamored with his offensive skills and like his size (6’-5” 195 lbs), his long arms (7’-1” wingspan) and his impressive offensive skills.
ESPN.com’s Chad Ford has Brooks listed as the 19th best prospect in the draft possibly going 17th overall in the first round to the New York Knicks.
A local NBA scout said the following to me recently. “Brooks is very talented offensively and his stock has risen to the point where he will probably be a first rounder. However, I still have questions about his ability and desire to defend. He was also a guy who played in spurts at PC. He’d go a while without scoring and then rattle off 10 quick points. At the NBA level, you can’t afford to turn it on and turn it off when you want. That’s why I still have concerns about him.”
If you had asked me when Marshon Brooks would be drafted 3 months ago I would have told you that it would have been highly likely that he went in the second round. Now? From everything I am hearing, he should be a late first round pick and has a chance to go as high as the middle of the first round.
