CVS Caremark Charity Classic Notes

Tuesday, June 29, 2010

Cut Down:

This was the first time that the field got to play Rhode Island Country Club after many trees were removed from the course.  Most seemed to like the changes including tournament co-host Brad Faxon.  “I absolutely love it,” he said.  “I think that aesthetically it’s a lot nicer and it creates for some visual deception.  It may make the course more forgiving for the average golfer but it doesn’t really make a difference for the pros.”

Breakfast Time:

Billy Andrade said of his round with Bill Haas, “we really ham and egged it!”  “We both made our share of birdies.  No one really carried the team.”

LPGA Hall of Famer Juli Inkster said the same about her round with Boo Weekley.  “We ham and egged it well out there,” she said.  “We both made our share of birdies.  When one was out of the hole the other was making a birdie.”

Keep the Skins Home:

There were only three skins earned on day one and two of the three were earned by the tournament co-hosts.  Brad Faxon and Rickie Fowler earned a skin with Faxon's birdie on the par 3 10th.  Billy Andrade and partner Bill Haas eagled the 11th for the only other skin.  The other skin went to the team of Hunter Mahan and Suzann Petterson.  They carded the only birdie on the par-4 3rd.  Each team won $8,333 for their efforts.

The Eagle Has Landed:

Andrade was quick to defer credit for his eagle on the par-5 11th  Monday.  “Bill hit a great drive and then drew a 4-iron high over the tree on the corner to about 20 feet.  That made my decision easy.  I had 246 yards and hit a utility club to about 6-7 feet and made the putt,” he said.

Go Patriots:

First year participant Ricky Barnes has a direct link to New England.  His father played for the Patriots in the early 70’s.  “My dad is still a Pats fan,” he said.  “He and my mom lived in North Attleboro when he played here but they had already moved back to California before I was born.”

Much Appreciated:

The always funny and very classy Peter Jacobsen summed up day one of the 12thannual CVS Caremark Charity Classic best.  “This is Rhode Island’s golf franchise,” said Jacobsen.  “All of these great PGA, LPGA and Champions Tour players come here to play each year to help raise money for charity.  What Tom Ryan, Brad Faxon and Billy Andrade have done for this community is great!”
