Wednesday, August 10, 2011
Now all we need, are the "where and when." But the Friars have the "who and what" all set for 2011-12.
Big East opponents for the upcoming basketball season are all set. Thursday afternoon, PC head coach Ed Cooley announced the non-league portion of the schedule for his first Friar team...which will tip-off Saturday, November 12 at the Dunkin Donuts Center against Fairleigh-Dickinson out of the Northeast Conference. PC will then travel to Fairfield for a road game against the Stags on Monday, November 14 before playing the first two games of the South Padre Island Invitational in Providence versus Florida A&M (Saturday, November 19) and Southern University (Tuesday, November 22). The Friars will then travel to South Padre Island, Texas for two games against Iowa State (Friday, November 25) at 8:30 p.m. ET and Northern Iowa on Saturday, November 26 at 7:30 p.m. ET. Both of those games will be televised on the CBS Sports Network.
The Friars will next play a big road game in the Big East-SEC Challenge, going to Columbia, SC to face the Gamecocks on Thursday, December 1 at 7:00 pm on ESPNU. They will also face ACC rival Boston College at the Dunk on Thursday, December 8. With the exception of a road game at Rhode Island on Friday, December 23, the remainder of the team's non-conference schedule will be at home, with games against Holy Cross (Tuesday, November 29), Brown (Monday, December 5), Bryant (Saturday, December 10) and New Hampshire (Tuesday, December 20).
And for the second time in the last three years, the Friars will also play an exhibition game on campus at Alumni Hall. The date, time and opponent have not yet been finalized. PC will also face UMass-Lowell at the Dunk on Saturday, November 5. Late Night Madness festivities will tip-off on Friday, October 14 on campus at Alumni Hall.
The Friars also have made some news with the current coaching staff, as Director of Basketball Operations Carmen Maciariello has decided to leave the staff and take a recruiting assistant position at Boston University. Maciariello came to Providence with Cooley from Fairfield - no word yet on a staff replacement.
Ticket information is available for all PC games by calling the athletic ticket office at (401) 865-GOPC. Every game, home and away, will once again be broadcast on 103.7 WEEI-FM.
