Friars will hit the road - often - next season

Friday, July 01, 2011

The Big East Conference has released its’ home and away opponents for the 2011-12 season in men’s basketball – and it’s fair to say the Providence Friars will be wearing traveling shoes.

In the 18-game league schedule, PC will face 12 teams once and three teams in a home-and-home arrangement. Georgetown, Syracuse and South Florida are the home-and-away opponents for the Friars, with playing dates still to be determined.

Coming to the Dunkin Donuts Center will be defending national champion UConn, along with Rick Pitino’s Louisville Cardinals, Marquette, Rutgers, Seton Hall and West Virginia. The Friars will travel for road games only to Cincinnati, DePaul, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, St. John’s and Villanova.

The non-conference portion of the schedule is not yet complete, but expected home opponents will be Brown and Boston College, while the Friars will play at URI and travel to Columbia, SC to face South Carolina in the SEC-Big East Challenge. PC will also take part in the South Padre Island Invitational in Texas over the Thanksgiving holiday, with two home games followed by two games at the tournament site. Potential tournament opponents in Texas include Iowa State and Northern Iowa.

In all, 13 of the 18 Big East games for PC will be played against teams that reached the 2011 NCAA Tournament. All conference games will be televised by CBS, ESPN or ESPN Regional Television. PC’s non-league schedule (and TV games) will be released at a later date – but all Friar games will again be broadcast on WEEI-FM 103.7 and streamed on friars.com.
