Holy Cross, BU Set For Season Long Battle For Turnpike Trophy

Saturday, August 15, 2015

The Holy Cross Crusaders and the Boston University Terriers have announced the creation of the Turnpike Trophy competition. The competition will be an athletic series between the two Patriot League and in-state rivals that will span over at least 21 sports in the inaugural year.

Points will be awarded for head-to-head victories, both during the regular season and the postseason, or a higher finish at the conference championships in cross country, rowing, swimming and diving. The trophy will be awarded to the school with the most points at the end of each academic year.

“Given the close proximity of our two schools, it is natural for a rivalry to develop between Holy Cross and Boston University. This rivalry has intensified since the Terriers joined the Patriot League, and now I expect the Turnpike Trophy will take it to a whole new level. Alumni, parents, students and fans will never have to travel far to see these outstanding match-ups, and our student-athletes and coaches are already looking forward to the opportunity to win the inaugural presentation of the trophy," said Holy Cross director of athletics Nathan Pine.

The Rivalry

BU and Holy Cross are separated by 42 miles and first found themselves together in the Yankee Conference in the 1970's and then went on to form the ECAC North in 1979. The Crusaders left for the MAAC in 1983 and would later form the Patriot League.

Boston University came to the Patriot League in 2013 after leaving the America East Conference.

“As we enter our third year in the Patriot League, a natural rivalry has been developing with our closest conference counterpart. “The Turnpike Trophy will make every competition between BU and Holy Cross even more special, and it will be something in which our student-athletes, coaches, student bodies and alumni can participate and enjoy," said BU director of athletics Drew Marrochello.

The Contest Begins

The first contest of the series will take place on Friday, October 9 in field hockey. Following that, BU will  host women's and men's soccer games on October 21 and 28 while the Patriot League Cross Country Championships will be held on Halloween at Colgate.
