Holy Cross Cruises Past South Carolina State 73-57 in Home Opener
Saturday, November 26, 2016
"We had a good start, but the good start was we shot the ball well early on. Rob got a couple I think and Matt got a couple around the basket," said Holy Cross head coach Bill Carmody in his press conference after the game.
After dropping their first three games of the season, Holy Cross has now won two straight games and improves to 2-3 on the season.
Holy Cross Pulls Away
The game was close early on with the Crusaders up 10-7 with 15:51 to play in the half.
From there, Holy Cross pushed their lead to double figures using an 18-5 run to go up 28-12. During that run, Robert Champion scored five of the Crusaders’ points.
South Carolina State would make a run of their own, an 11-1 run, to get within six points, 31-25, just before the half.
"There was a stretch there where they cut it and then we extended to 15 or 16, that’s just execution. But then there were lapses for whatever reason, you can’t make 15 turnovers and win too many games," said Carmody.
However, Holy Cross would regain control right before the half, going on a 6-0 run in the final 1:30 seconds to take a double-digit lead into the locker room.
In the second, The Crusaders led 54-43 with 10 minutes to play in the game before they sealed the win with a 10-2 run to take a 64-45 lead .
South Carolina State would get no closer than 13 points the rest of the way.
The Leaders
The Crusaders were led by Champion who poured in 18 points on 6 of 10 shooting from the field and 3 of 6 from beyond the arc.
Karl Charles followed up with 14 points on 4 of 8 shooting from the field while grabbing five rebounds and dishing out nine assists.
Next up
The Crusaders return to action on Sunday, November 27 when they host Monmouth at the Hart Center. The game serves as the second contest in the Brooklyn Hoops Invitational.
Tip-off is set for noon.
