slides: Holy Cross Falls Short at Lafayette, Loses 89-81

The Holy Cross Crusaders (11-14, 6-9 PL) fell 89-81 on the road to (15-11, 7-8 PL) Lafayette on Wednesday night. The loss snaps the Crusaders two game winning streak and pushes them back to three games under .500 with only three to go.

Holy Cross trailed by one point, 52-51 with 14 minutes left to play in the game before Lafayette went on a 14-3 run to take a commanding 66-54 lead with just over 11 minutes left in the game. 

The Crusaders made a couple of small runs the rest of the way but were unable to get closer than six points. Lafayette knocked down six of their ten free throws to seal the game. 

Holy Cross was led by Malcolm Miller who netted a career high 25 points in the game while Justin Burrell followed up with 14 of his own. 

Lafayette was led by Seth Hinrichs who netted 19 points. 

The Crusaders return to action on Sunday February 22 when they visit Navy. Tip-off is set for 12 noon.

Eric Green

Eric Green had another solid performance off the bench for the Crusaders in their loss to Lafayette. 

Green netted 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. Green also dished out two assists, had one steal and one assist in 24 minutes of play time. 

Robert Champion was the only other player off the Holy Cross bench with any significant production as he had nine points.

Justin Burrell

Justin Burrell was second on the team in scoring against Lafayette with 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the field, including 4-of-8 from three point land. 

Burrell did not get to the free throw line in the game and Holy Cross only shot a total of 12 free throws as a team, making nine of them. Lafayette shot 23. 

Burrell also added three assists and one rebound to his stat line.

Second chance points

Cullen Hamilton grabbed two offensive rebounds to lead Holy Cross in that category however, the eight offensive rebounds the Crusaders had in the game did not translate to points. 

Both Holy Cross and Lafayette grabbed eight offensive boards in the game but Lafayette converted for 14 points  while the Crusaders only converted for three. 

The Crusaders can't let those second chance opportunities go to waste.

Malcolm Miller

Malcolm Miller did his part in the game, netting a career high 25 points, pulling down eight rebounds and dishing out three assists. 

Miller's 25 points came on 9-of-14 shooting from the field, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. 

Miller also added three steals and one block in 36 minutes of play time. 

As his college career winds down, Miller has been playing some of his best basketball of the season. This game being one of his best games of the season.

Must wins

Holy Cross is now 6-9 on the season with three games left to go and currently sit in a three way tie for 7th in the Patriot League. 

The Crusaders visit Navy on Sunday before hosting Loyola and then finishing the season against Boston University. 

Both Navy and Loyola are tied with the Crusaders making these two games must wins and all three games are must wins if Holy Cross wants to finish .500 and ride some big momentum into the Patriot League tournament which starts on March 3.
