Holy Cross Football Looks to Build on Last Season

Saturday, September 05, 2015

Coach Tom Gilmore

The Holy Cross Crusaders football team kicks off their 120th football season on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they travel to Monmouth the Hawks. The last time the Crusaders met was September 21, 2013  with Monmouth winning 21-14 at Holy Cross.

"I think we have played them one time in our history. Lots of uncertainty and a bit of a guessing game with them," Holy Cross head coach Tom Gilmore said.

This will be only the second meeting ever between the two schools. The game can be seen live on ESPN3.com and heard on WEEI 1440 am in Worcester.

Building Off of Last Season

The Crusaders are coming off of a season in which they went  4-8 overall and 2-4 in the Patriot League. However, the Crusaders were in just about every game.

"Last year we came up on the short end of the stick in a couple of games. I mean six of the eight losses could have easily gone the other way.

This year's team is more experienced with returning players I think we should be able to pull some of those games out," said Gilmore.

Offensively, Holy Cross returns junior quarterback Peter Pujals who completed 225 of 375 passes for 2,353 yards and ten touchdowns. Pujals was named second team All- Patriot League in 2014.

The Crusaders also return junior wide receiver Jake Wieczorek who caught 50 passes for 694 yards and five touchdowns.

"Especially Pujals, he had a good year last year, expectation is that he will have a great year this year. I think experience will help him in situations where sometimes its better just to throw the ball away instead of trying to force a play or take a sack," Gilmore said on the high expectations for Pujals and the offense.

Meanwhile, on the defensive end the Crusaders will be led by safety Matt Bhaya, who totaled 40 tackles and four pass breakups.

Said Gilmore on the defense, "Very high expectations for the defense this year. We have a lot of returning players that have been in all situations so more experience. We have more experience on the defensive side of the ball than we do on offense."
