Monday, November 28, 2016

Anthony Thompson led Holy Cross with 18 points.

The Holy Cross Crusaders lost an 80-77 heartbreaker to Monmouth on Sunday afternoon at the Hart Center. The game was played as part of the Brooklyn Hoops Holiday Invitational, with Holy Cross going 1-3 in the tournament.

The loss snaps Holy Cross’ two-game winning streak and drops them to 2-4 overall. Monmouth improves to 4-2 overall.

Holy Cross Can’t Hold on

Anthony Thompson and Karl Charles knocked down three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to put Holy Cross up 75-69 with less than a minute to play in the game.

Then Monmouth's 8-0 run started.

Holy Cross held an 77-72 lead with 13.4 seconds to play when Monmouth’s Pierre Starr converted a three point play to cut the Crusaders’ lead to just two points.

The Crusaders still held a two-point lead with 7.5 seconds to play when Monmouth’s Micah Seaborn converted a three-point play after being fouled while driving to the basket to give Monmouth their first lead since early in the half, 78-77.

On the Crusaders ensuing possession, Monmouth’s Austin Tilghman stole the ball in the back court, was fouled and knocked down two free throws with 3.5 seconds to play to give Monmouth a three-point lead.

Thompson missed a three-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game.

The Leaders

Thompson led Holy Cross with 18 points 5 of 7 shooting from the field and 4 of 4 from the free throw line.

Charles nearly had a triple-double in the game, posting 12 points, eight assists and seven rebounds in 38 minutes of action.
