John Rooke’s College Notes

Friday, May 13, 2011

We’ll start it off with news from the diamond:

• Lincoln's Tom Coulombe was 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBI in URI's 9-5 win over UMass on May 7. Coulombe, a senior, became the school's all-time leader in runs scored with 157. Additionally, junior third baseman Dan Haverstick was named the Atlantic 10 player of the week for May 9th – he hit .636 in a series sweep over UMass. Haverstick is the 5th player this season to win A-10 player of the week honors for the Rams…

The Rams - who have won 10 of their last 11 Atlantic 10 games - improve to 15-6 in the conference and 29-17 overall, and are currently tied for first place in the league with Charlotte. They next face nationally-ranked UConn on May 16th at Bill Beck Field in Kingston…

• Bryant’s baseball team finished their season with a solid 13-7 home mark, with four games left to play on the road this weekend at Fairleigh Dickinson. The Bulldogs are 26-23 overall, 15-12 in the Northeast Conference. Currently in 4th place, they hold just a half game advantage over Central Connecticut for the fourth and final playoff spot in the NEC post-season tournament. Sophomore pitcher Sal Lisanti was named NEC pitcher of the week after a 3-hit, seven inning shutout against Quinnipiac…

• East Providence native Gary Levesque was named Little East conference player of the week on May 9th, for the Rhode Island College Anchormen. The senior pitcher hit .667, and went 8-for-11 at the plate in a doubleheader sweep of Plymouth State. He also pitched seven innings and recorded nine strikeouts in the first game win. The Anchormen earned the final slot in the Little East tournament on Wednesday against Eastern Connecticut…

• At Johnson & Wales, the Wildcats had six players named to the All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference team, announced by the league office after a vote by the coaches. Head Coach John LaRose was named Coach of the Year after leading the Wildcats to their eighth 20-win season in the last 10 years and a second place finish in the league standings…

• CCRI ended a highly successful season this past Monday with a 4-0 loss to nationally-ranked UConn-Avery Point in the Region XXI championship. The Knights finished the year 30-11…

• The RIC Anchorwomen earned an at-large berth in the NCAA Division III tournament and are hosting the Providence Regional at their own Dayna Bazar Softball Complex this week. The Anchorwomen are 33-11 on the year, and have earned their fifth NCAA bid in the past six seasons. Seniors Amanda Berard (Swansea, MA), Kayla Jandreau (Plainville, CT) and Chelsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, MA), along with sophomores Emily Johnson (West Kingston, RI) and Kristina Gingell (Pascoag, RI), were named All-Little East Conference for their play this season…CCRI’s softball team finished the 2011 season with a 20-13 mark as they dropped two games in the District I tournament…

• Salve Regina finished up their season with 20 wins (21-21 overall) and had five players make all-conference, including East Providence junior outfielder Matt Capone; Roger Williams also won 20 games (finishing 22-21), and coach Derek Carlson was named conference co-coach of the year. The Hawks ended their season just shy of the Commonwealth Coast Conference semi-finals…
Elsewhere:

• Rhode Island captured the 2011 Atlantic 10 Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship, completing a sweep of the indoor and outdoor conference crowns.

The Rams compiled 179 points - including 100 on day two - to capture their eighth Atlantic 10 team title overall, and first since 2008. Rhody edged defending champion Charlotte by just 2.5 points. John Copeland earned 2011 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year honors.

• LaDontae Henton made it official, signing a national letter of intent to play basketball with PC…love his nickname - “buckets.” Henton is 6-6, 215 pounds and primarily plays at the forward position. He was mid-Michigan’s first four-time all-state player in 11 years, and one of just four players from his area to score 2000 career points…one of those being Earvin “Magic” Johnson. “Buckets” averaged 25.2 points, 14.5 rebounds, 5.2 assists, 3.1 blocks and 2.2 steals per game last season…
