Lakers spoil Allen’s big night
Friday, February 11, 2011
After getting beat by Boston on its home court in January, Los Angeles returned the favor on Thursday with a 92-86 win over the Celtics at the TD Garden.
Criticized throughout the season for their inability to beat quality opponents, the Lakers are now 3-0 on their current road trip with wins at New Orleans (32-19), Memphis (27-25) and Boston (38-13) while the Celtics have lost back-to-back games for the first time since Jan. 8 and 10.
Allen became the NBA’s all-time career leader in 3-pointers, but Kobe Bryant stole the show, scoring 20 of his 23 points in the second half as Los Angeles erased an eight-point halftime deficit for its fifth regular-season win at Boston in its last six tries.
The banged-up Celtics were without Shaquille O’Neal and Semih Erden, putting them at a serious disadvantage in the paint. Pau Gasol responded with 20 points and 10 rebounds and Andrew Bynum had 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Lamar Odom and Shannon Brown combined for 22 points off the bench.
All five of Boston’s starters reached double figures, led by Allen with 20 points and Paul Pierce with 15, but the Celtics only got 17 points from their bench. Boston has now lost three of four overall and will look to get back on track Sunday at home against Miami (38-14).
