Mt. Ida College Lacrosse Grabs Three Central Mass Players

Thursday, May 31, 2012

Oakmont's Mike Markevich is heading to Mt. Ida after a high-scoring senior season.

Three Central Massachusetts boys’ lacrosse players will be taking their talents to Division III Mount Ida College in Newton in the fall.

Oakmont attacker Michael Markevich, Blackstone Valley Tech midfielder/attacker Trevor Hendrix, and Shrewsbury long-stick midfielder J.P. Bisceglia will all suit up for the Mustangs next season.

Markevich finished in the top four in Central Mass in both points (102), and goals (67) this season. The Westminster native also recorded 35 assists in helping lead Oakmont to a 15-3 record.

“Mike is a terrific player,” Oakmont head coach Mick O’Reilly said. “He’s very shifty, and he knows the game very well. He has a lot of different little moves that help him get free. He’s got a good mind for the game down low, and that can really give the other team a hard time.”

“We saw Mike in an indoor league, and we couldn’t pass him up,” said Mount Ida head coach Andrew Fink. “We were watching a game to see another kid and all of a sudden he’s putting up 5 or 6 goals. He’s just a consistent scorer. He finds a way to put up at least 2, 3 points every game.”

“I think the thing that separates Mike is his knowledge for the game,” O’Reilly said. “At halftime I’ve gone to him and [senior Brendan O’Toole] and asked them, you know, ‘What’s going on? What are you seeing out there?’ And we’ll go back and forth and have a conversation about it because both of them really understand the game so well.”

Blackstone Valley Tech’s Trevor Hendrix could join Markevich as an attacker next season, although Fink hasn’t yet decided where he wants Hendrix to play.

“We feel like we can move him around,” Fink said. “He’s very athletic, he’s got a great college body, and we really believe he has a lot of potential. We know he’s going to work tremendously hard when he gets here.”

“Trevor has got great shooting skills,” said BVT head coach Anthony Comforti, whose team finished 12-5 this season. “He’s got a great ability to put the ball in the net. It really just comes natural to him.”

Hendrix will join former BVT teammate Chaz Strom at Mount Ida. Mustangs senior defenseman Mike Conway also attended BVT. “Another reason why we like Trevor is because the two we have right now from Blackstone Valley are great kids,” Fink said. “Chaz had a breakout season for us as a freshman, and we feel like Trevor can do the same thing.”

Long-stick midfielder J.P. Bisceglia will bring even more defensive tenacity to Mount Ida, which has won eight conference championships in the past nine seasons in the Greater New England Athletic Conference.

“We play a heavy defensive system, and we feel that J.P. definitely has the talent to come right in and excel in our system,” Fink said. “We believe he can come in and not miss a beat.”
“With a player like J.P., we’re going to be able to put three defensemen and one long-stick midfielder on the field at the same time. That’s going to help us take our transition game to the next level,” he said.

Mount Ida currently has four players on its roster who come from Central Mass, including top scorer Nick Yacuzzi, who played at St. John’s. Fink believes that the area is developing into a fertile ground for lacrosse talent.

“Central Mass is coming up and coming fast. We’ve found some great talent there, and now we’re trying to make connections…meet the coaches. We’re trying to lay the groundwork there so we can be a little bit ahead of the game on finding fantastic talent,” he said.

“We’ve been very successful there.”
