How a Nashoba Lacrosse Player Transformed His Body
Saturday, April 14, 2012
Sophomore Mike d’Entremont is off to a quick start this year, leading the Chieftains with eight goals, but it was the time he put in before the year started that has the talented attacker where he is now.
“One kid that really killed it in the gym this off-season is Mike d’Entremont,” Nashoba lacrosse coach Joel Bates said. “He has just totally reshaped his body, losing fat, and putting on a lot of muscle. He’s playing quicker for us this year, and he looks like our most promising offensive player.”
That work ethic in the gym began when d’Entrmont started working out with Nashoba’s football team. After working hard to be the best defensive end and offensive tackle he could be, d’Entremont could not get enough of lifting weights.
“I just fell in love with it,” d’Entremont said. “I love lifting weights, and I’ve really focused on eating right. I want to gain good, lean bulk. I’ve been really into it, reading all the muscle magazines and stuff like that.”
A Winter Well Spent
While many stayed bundled up inside and put on some holiday pounds, d’Entremont was hard at work this winter. After football introduced him to weights in the fall, d’Entremont made sure nothing got in the way of his training in the winter.
“I would wake up at 5:30 am every morning, since I had hockey practice after school,” d’Entremont said. “On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, I would head to the gym and do the core lifts. Things like bench press, squat and power clean. Then on Tuesdays and Thursdays I would work on agility and speed drills in my yard.”
Impact on Lacrosse
It may have been football that introduced d’Entremont to weight training, but it is the Nashoba Lacrosse team that is first reaping the benefits of his hard work. The young attacker has emerged as the team’s go-to scorer, and now possesses the power and speed to be an offensive force.
Though he has actually gained weight, going from around 180 lbs. to 200 lbs, d’Entremont stresses that he is leaner and quicker than he has ever been.
“I weigh more this year, but I feel a lot lighter,” d’Entremont said. “I’m definitely quicker on the field, and I feel like the weight I am carrying is good weight that I can use.”
Ready to Carry Offensive Load
The Chieftains are still in the process of learning how to play without last year’s leading scorer Nick French. The senior broke multiple bones in his leg earlier this year, and Nashoba has gone 2-2 since his injury. While the Chieftains have lost games to St. John’s and Algonquin, the top two teams in the region, they were able to grab an impressive win over Westborough Tuesday.
“It was a huge win for us,” d’Entremont said. “It’s tough playing without a great scorer like Nick, but we have a lot of other guys that are stepping up. We still think we can have a great year.”
Off the Field
The sophomore’s body transformation has certainly been huge on the field, and he says he is bench pressing 30 pounds more than he was in the fall. But, it has affected his life just as much off the field. Armed with a new-found confidence and sense of accomplishment, d’Entremont is excited for the future.
“I just feel really good in general right now,” d’Entremont said. “It’s a lot of really hard work, but I feel proud and very accomplished. It’s given me the confidence to know that if I put my mind to something and work for it, I can accomplish anything.”
