Patriots Beat Jets 22-17 at MetLife Stadium
Monday, November 28, 2016
"We didn't play as well as we wanted to, but we made the plays when we needed to. It was a division game on the road. It's always a tough team to play. I thought they played really well. I'm glad we made those plays there at the end," said Brady after the game.
The win moves the Patriots to 9-2 on the season, while the Jets fall to 3-8.
Patriots Come Back
Trailing 17-16 with two minutes to play, Brady hit Malcolm Mitchell on a quick out to the outside for a touchdown to put the Patriots up 22-17 with 1:56 to play. New England then went for two-point conversion, but it was ruled no good.
Prior to that, it was the Jets who came back. Trailing 13-10, Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick found Quincy Enunwa in the corner of the end zone for a 22-yard touchdown pass, giving the Jets a 17-13 lead after a Nick Folk extra point.
The score capped off an eight-play drive for the Jets that started on their own 27-yard line.
Butler Sparks the Patriots
The Patriots trailed the Jets 10-3 with 10 minutes left in the half and the Jets had the ball. On second and nine, Fitzpatrick threw to receiver Robby Anderson down the right side for a completion at the 50-yard line. Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler forced and recovered a fumble, giving the Patriots the ball back.
Seven plays later, Brady fumbled the ball, picked it up and found Malcolm Mitchell in the back of the end zone for a touchdown to tie the game at ten following a Gostkowski extra point with 6:35 to play in the half.
"I was trying to put it in Julian Edelman's pocket and it just hit off his hip and dropped to the ground. So I picked it up really quickly, so I can gather. Malcolm did a great job of running across the back end. He gave me a chance to make the play. He made a lot of great catches today. It's not how we drew it up, but it worked," Brady said.
On the Jets ensuing possession, Fitzpatrick would drive the Jets to the Patriots 36-yard line before the Patriots defense held them and forced a field goal attempt.
Nick Folk's 54-yard field goal attempt would be blocked by Alan Branch and recovered by Dont'a Hightower, giving the Patriots the ball back at their own 46-yard line with 1:58 to play.
With only one timeout remaining, Brady connected with Mitchell, Danny Amendola, and Chris Hogan to drive the Patriots to the Jets 21-yard line with less than 20 seconds left in the half.
Brady took one shot at the end zone, but a pass to Mitchell fell incomplete.
Kicker Stephen Gostkowski would come on with six seconds to play, but would miss a 39-yard field goal that would have given the Patriots a 13-10 lead.
The miss was Gostkowski's fourth missed field goal of the season.
The Patriots and Jets would go into the locker room tied at ten.
Gronkowski Injured
Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski left the game late in the first quarter with a back injury. At the time of his injury, he was listed as questionable to return but would be ruled out at the start of the third quarter.
Patriots announce that TE Rob Gronkowski will not return. Back injury. Played 7 of the first 12 snaps.
