Patriots Make Some Surprise Cuts

Mike Gillislee is among the cuts

Cornerback Cyrus Jones, running back Mike Gillislee and linebacker Marquis Flowers are among the cuts as the New England Patriots trimmed their roster to 53 players on Saturday afternoon.

Along with Jones, Gillislee, and Flowers, the Patriots cuts are as follows: 

Rookie QB Danny Etling, who could be headed to the practice squad, rookie wide receiver Braxton Berrios was placed on injured reserve, cornerback Ryan Lewis, wide receiver Devin Lucien, defensive lineman Frank Herron, wide receiver Paul Turner and running back Khalfani Muhammad; guard Jason King and running back Ralph Webb. 

Other cuts include center Luke Bowanko, with an injury settlement, safety Damarius Travis, offensive tackle Ulrick John was placed on injured reserve, defensive end Eric Lee, defensive lineman John Atkins, defensive tackle Vincent Valentine, tight end Ryan Izzo, wide receiver KJ Maye, cornerback Jomal Wiltz, punter Corey Bojorquez, cornerback AJ Moore and linebacker Harvey Langi. 

Season Opener 

The Patriots open their season on Sunday, September 9 when they host the Houston Texans at Gillette Stadium. 

Game time is set for 1 p.m.
