With the win, the Red Sox magic number for clinching a playoff spot is six and their AL East lead over the Yankees is three.
The Red Sox improve to 85-63 on the season.
Red Sox Edge Rays
With the game tied at 0 in the second inning, Betts led off the inning with a home run off Tampa’s Alex Cobb to give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead.
Betts would give the Red Sox a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning with an RBI single. It was his 12th RBI in eight games.
Betts would score a run following a two-out double from Rafael Devers to put Boston up 3-0.
Tampa’s Adeiny Hechavarria led off the seventh with a double against Porcello.
He moved to third on a passed ball and scored when a throw from Boston first baseman Mitch Moreland bounced off a runner on a double-play attempt.
However, the Rays would get no closer as Craig Kimbrel picked up his 33rd save of the season in the ninth inning.
Series Concludes
The Red Sox and Rays wrap up their series on Sunday, September 17 at 1:10 p.m.
The pitching matchup is Boston’s Eduardo Rodriguez against Tampa’s Jake Odorizzi.
