Previewing Patriots-Eagles - What To Watch

Thursday, August 14, 2014

The New England Patriots will host the Philadelphia Eagles in preseason game number two, Friday, at Gillette Stadium. Both teams are coming off losses in their first preseason action, and will be looking to improve on their performances. The Patriots are expected to play more of the "regular" players, such as Tom Brady, Darrelle Revis and others, after they sat out preseason game number one.

The Eagles and Patriots have been competing in joint practice sessions this week, which has led to some intriguing match ups and players to watch on Friday:

Malcolm Butler:

Butler was a standout performer in the Patriots' first preseason game and throughout Training Camp. Butler will likely get an extended look again from the Patriots coaching staff against a group of receivers that have great size.

Butler could match up one-on-one with players such as Jordan Matthews, Arrelious Benn and others. Butler will be at a size disadvantage, and seeing how he reacts will be important if the Patriots are considering keeping him on the 53-man roster.

Safety Not Named McCourty:

Who will play safety next to Devin McCourty? That has been one of the major questions throughout Training Camp. Will Duron Harmon, Patrick Chung or Tavon Wilson step into the role? Or will a surprise player such as Kanorris Davis or Nate Ebner fill the role. Or do the Patriots move a player such as Logan Ryan, Kyle Arrington or Travis Hawkins into that role?

Patriots Linebackers vs. Eagles Running Backs:

Even if Jerod Mayo misses this game, the Patriots linebackers will be on display having to cover the Eagles elusive running backs. Between LeSean McCoy and Darren Sproles, the Eagles have a potent passing attack to of the backfield. The struggles of Dont'a Hightower covering running backs is well-known, but how will the rest of the linebackers fare?

Ryan Mallett vs. Jimmy Garoppolo:

The backup quarterback position could be up for grabs after the performances turned in by Mallett and Garoppolo against the Redskins. Mallett struggled while Garoppolo showed a great deal of skill. Who will be the first quarterback off the bench, assuming Tom Brady plays?
