Princeton Beats Brown 78-60
Saturday, January 29, 2011
The Princeton Tigers turned an 8-point deficit into a 14-point lead in an impressive 8 minute stretch of the first half en route to a 78-60 win over the Brown bears Friday night in New Jersey.
The Bears were looking for their first win in league play heading into the game having dropped their first two Ivy contests to Yale the previous two weeks. And things looked good early on for Brown who jumped out to a 21-13 lead with just over 10 minutes to play in the first half.
But the Tigers showed why they were the preseason pick to win the league with an impressive 24-2 run which put Princeton on top 37-23 late in the first half on their way to victory.
Brown’s leading scorer and senior co-captain Peter Sullivan (6 pts) suffered what appeared to be a dislocated right shoulder early in the second half. It’s the same shoulder Sullivan injured at Yale his junior season which affected him for a 4 week stretch last year in league play. There’s no word on how much time, if any, he will miss this season.
Sullivan’s brother – sophomore Matt Sullivan filled the void with a career-high 22 points. He was one of only two Bears in double figures along with sophomore Tucker Halpern who finished with 12.
Princeton entered the game with a well-balanced offensive attack with 4 players averaging 13 points per game. Those 4 players did their thing again Friday night with Kareem Maddox leading the way with a team-high 15 points and 14 rebounds. Guard Doug Davis scored 14, while Dan Mavraides and Ian Hummer finished with 13 each.
With the win, Princeton improved to (13-4) on the year and (1-0) in the Ivy League. The loss dropped Brown to (7-10) on the season. The Bears are now (0-3) in Ivy play.
Brown will try to pick up its first win in league play tonight when they battle Penn (7-8, 1-0 Ivy) at the Palestra in Philadelphia at 7pm. The Quakers defeated Yale Friday night 66-58.
