Quakers Sweep the Bears 70-62
Saturday, February 19, 2011
Brown senior co-captain Peter Sullivan returned to the Brown line-up Friday night following a 5-game absence due to an injured right shoulder. Sullivan, the Bears leading scorer, scored a team-high 16 points on 7-9 shooting but it wasn’t enough beat the Quakers. Penn defeated Brown 70-62 at the Pizzatola Sports Center.
Sullivan played with a brace strapped to his right shoulder but seemed to have no problem with it. Unfortunately, the rest of the Bears shot 16 of 50 (32%) from the field which wasn’t enough to topple Penn.
Brown jumped out to an early lead on back-to-back buckets by freshman Dockery Walker but trailed Penn most of the way.
Down by 7, 28-21, at halftime, Brown fell behind by 14 (35-21) just over 2 minutes into the second half.
But the Bears battled back and actually took the lead 49-48 on a Peter Sullivan three with 6:18 to play. The Bears also led 51-50 after a pair of Sean McGonagill (16 pts, 5 assists, 4 reb) free throws with 4:36 left. But the Quakers went on an 18-4 run over the next 4 minutes to put the game away.
With the win, the Quakers picked up the season sweep of Brown.
The loss drops the Bears to (9-14, 2-7 Ivy League) on the season. Penn improves to (10-12, 4-4 Ivy League).
Brown hosts Ivy League-leader Princeton (20-4, 8-0 Ivy League) tonight at 6pm at the Pizzatola Sports Center. The Tiger defeated Yale 58-51 in New Haven Friday night.
