Rams Can’t Hang with Gators
Tuesday, January 04, 2011
Rhode Island closed the non-conference portion of its schedule in Gainesville and suffered an 84-59 loss to the Gators that dropped its record to 9-5 with Atlantic-10 rival Xavier coming to town on Sunday.
Delroy James finished with a game-high 23 points for Rhode Island, but the Gators (11-3) pulled away toward the end of the first half courtesy of a 12-0 run that bumped their lead to 13 points.
Two long scoring droughts in the first put Rhode Island behind by as many as 21 points in the opening half. The Rams pulled to within 12 in the second half before the Gators broke it open for good.
Chandler Parsons led Florida’s balanced scoring attack with 18 points. Three other players reached double figures, including Erving Walker for 14 points. Florida shot 47 points from the floor and 44 percent from 3-point range.
Outside of James, the only other player to reach double figures for the Rams was Will Martell, who shot 6-of-9 from the field and scored 13 points. Rhode Island shot a dismal 17 percent from 3-point range.
The Rams open A-10 play Sunday at home against the Musketeers, who are 8-4 overall and also lost to Florida last week.
