Rams clamp down to stop Hawks
Thursday, January 20, 2011
The Rams shut down St. Joseph’s when it mattered most and held on for a 64-59 victory Wednesday at the Michael J. Hagan ’85 Arena for their third consecutive win.
The Hawks (5-13, 0-5 A-10) entered the game winless in Atlantic-10 play, but led by a basket at the break thanks to a strong effort from Carl Jones, who scored 17 of his game-high 25 points in the opening half.
The Rams responded by holding Jones scoreless for the first 13 minutes of the second half. St. Joseph’s scored only 22 points as a team and Rhode Island (12-6, 3-1 A-10) took the lead for a good on a layup by Delroy James with 15:14 remaining.
The Rams followed James’ basket with an 8-0 run to break the game open and subsequently held the Hawks scoreless for nearly seven minutes.
James led Rhode Island with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Akeem Richmond finished with 13 points and Marquis Jones added 12. Rhode Island will host La Salle at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Ryan Center.
