Rams rebound to beat Richmond

Friday, January 14, 2011

A big road win within the conference can do wonders for a team’s psyche.

Coming off Sunday’s disastrous loss to Xavier, the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team rebounded in style Thursday with a 78-74 win over Richmond at the Robins Center.

The lead changed hands 15 times Thursday, but the Rams (10-6, 1-1 Atlantic 10) came out on top thanks to a career-high 24 points and 12 rebounds from Nikola Malesevic and 18 points off the bench from Orion Outerbridge.

Rhode Island took the lead for good courtesy of a 6-0 run in the closing minutes, capped by a pair of free throws from Outerbridge. Akeem Richmond added 12 points for the Rams.
Thursday’s win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Rams, who lost at Florida on Jan. 3 and suffered another double-digit loss Sunday at home against Xavier in its A-10 opener. Richmond entered Thursday’s game unbeaten in conference play and 13-4 overall.
