Rams rout Fordham

Sunday, February 27, 2011

So much for the idea of this being a trap game. Delroy James made sure there would be no letdown.

Fresh off a big win over Duquesne, Rhode Island continued its late-season surge in the Atlantic 10 standings Saturday with a 90-58 rout against hapless Fordham in the Bronx. James shot 12-of-17 from the floor and scored a game-high 29 points as the Rams won for the fourth time in their last five games and improved to 18-10 overall and 9-5 in conference play.

In recent years, the Rams have played their worst in February, but with Wednesday’s win at Duquesne and Saturday’s victory in the Bronx, they’re now tied with the Dukes for fourth place in the A-10 (Duquesne dropped to 9-5 in conference play with a loss to St. Louis). The Rams will earn the tiebreaker if they finish tied with Duquesne and would subsequently receive a first-round bye in the upcoming A-10 Tournament in Atlantic City.

Twelve players scored for Rhode Island on Saturday, including Nikola Malesevic, who finished with 13 points. Fordham is now 0-14 in A-10 play and has lost 40 consecutive conference games. The Rams will host George Washington on Wednesday before closing the regular season next Saturday at Saint Bonaventure.
