Red Sox Catcher Blake Swihart’s Brother Passes Away at 23
Thursday, February 28, 2019
The death comes a week after the Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo passed away while covering Spring Training.
“We went through Nick, and now we’re going through this – it’s not easy. Honestly. Just start thinking the same things I said last week, same feelings today. Same feelings,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora during a brief press conference on Wednesday morning.
Jordan was adopted by the Swihart family in high school, according to multiple reports.
He attended the University of New Mexico where he played football from 2014-2017.
The cause of death is unknown.
Swihart has left the team to be with his family.
Red Sox Cancel Morning Media Session
Earlier in the day, the Red Sox canceled their morning media session at Fort Myers that was scheduled to take place from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.
Shortly after, they announced that a player is dealing with a “family emergency.”
“Through triumph, tragedy, and heartbreak this team/organization sticks together,” said David Price in a tweet.
Cora added, “We turn the page on whatever happens on the field and we’re very close. We’re very close. That’s a special group in there. They’re very special. They’re very close and they spend time together and yeah, we’ll be OK, we know that. It puts everything in perspective again. It’s just a game. Yeah, it’s a tough day. It’s a tough day.”
