Boston loses in the ALDS for the second straight season after losing to Cleveland last season.
Houston advances to their first LCS since 2005.
Houston Comes Back to Beat Red Sox
Boston grabbed a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-run home run by Andrew Benintendi just inside the Pesky Pole.
However, the Astros would come back in the 8th.
With Red Sox ace Chris Sale on the mound, Houston’s Alex Bregman hit a leadoff home run over the Green Monster to tie the game at 3.
After Sale got the next two outs, Boston brought in closer Craig Kimbrel.
With one man on base, Kimbrel gave up an RBI single to left field off the bat of former Red Sox Josh Reddick to give the Astros a 4-3 lead.
Houston would add another run in the top of the 9th on an RBI double by Carlos Beltran to push their lead to 5-3.
Now trailing by two in the bottom of the 9th, Rafael Devers led off the inning with an inside-the-park home run to cut Houston’s lead to 5-4.
However, Boston would not manage to get another run in the inning to fall 5-4.
Sale in Relief
Sale pitched 4.2 innings in relief of starter Rick Porcello. Sale gave up four hits and two runs, while striking out six.
He picked up the loss.
Porcello went only three innings and gave up five hits and two runs before being pulled.
Missed Opportunities
The Red Sox had the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the second inning after Christian Vazquez drew a four-pitch walk.
However, they would not get anything out of it.
Jackie Bradley Jr. and Dustin Pedroia both struck out. Pedroia is hitting .204 in his last 26 postseason games.
Following the Pedroia strikeout, Red Sox manager John Farrell came out to argue balls and strikes with home plate umpire Mark Wegner.
Farrell would be thrown out of the game.
Xander Bogaerts would fly out to end the inning.
The Red Sox’ season is over. The Houston Astros win Game 4 of the American League Division Series, 5-4, take the best of 5 series, 3 to 1.

In a major way, Craig Kimbrel failed today. Boo’d as he leaves the mound.
