Red Sox Hold Off Yankees 5-4 in Game 1 of ALDS
Saturday, October 06, 2018
Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale struck out eight and gave up two runs for his first postseason win.
“He pitched well, he pitched well. Tonight, from the get-go with McCutchen he was very aggressive in the strike zone, you could see the good extension, repeating his delivery, breaking ball was good, changeup was good, he was outstanding for us. Gave us a chance to win the game,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora in his post-game press conference.
Boston now has a 1-0 series lead in the best-of-five.
Red Sox Hold Off Yankees
The Red Sox jumped out to an early lead when J.D. Martinez belted a three-run home run into the Green Monster seats in the bottom of the first inning to give the Red Sox a 3-0 lead.
Boston would add two more runs in the bottom of the third when Steve Pearce hit an RBI single to score Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts hit a sac fly to score Andrew Benintendi to put the Red Sox up 5-0.
In the sixth inning, with the Red Sox bullpen in the game, the Yankees began to rally.
With Brett Gardner and Giancarlo on base for the Yankees, Cora took Sale out of the game and replaced him with Ryan Brasier.
The first batter Brasier faced was Luke Voit, who hit an RBI single to right field to score Gardner.
The very next batter was Didi Gregorius, who hit into a fielder’s choice, but would score Stanton to make it 5-2 Red Sox.
Now with two outs, the Yankees would load the bases with Boston’s Brandon Workman on the mound. However, Workman was able to get Glyber Torres to strike out to end the inning.
In the very next inning, the Yankees would load the bases again, this time with no outs, and Matt Barnes on the mound.
However, New York was only able to get one run out of it when Andrew McCutchen scored after Luke Voit grounded into a fielder’s choice to make it 5-3.
Aaron Judge led off the top of the ninth with a home run to cut the Boston’s lead to 5-4, before closer Craig Kimbrel got Gardner, Stanton and Voit to strike out to close the game.
