Red Sox Manage Only 3 Hits, Shut Out by Rays 1-0
Sunday, July 09, 2017
Boston pitcher Rick Porcello gave up one run while allowing six hits and striking out seven in a complete game.
He is now 0-3 against the Rays this season after going 5-0 against them last season.
The loss is Porcello's 11th of the season, making him only the second pitcher in MLB history to have 11 losses before the All-Star break a year after winning the Cy Young.
The Red Sox fall to 50-38 on the season.
Red Sox Can’t get on Scoreboard
With the game scoreless in the second inning, Tampa’s Steven Souza Jr. and Brad Miller each singled to put two men on base.
That set up Tampa’s Jesus Sucre for a sacrifice fly to put the Rays up 1-0. That run would be enough.
The Red Sox would only get three hits off of Cobb, who retired 11 straight at one point.
The hits were by Xander Bogaerts in the first, Mookie Betts in the third and Mitch Moreland in the ninth.
Series Continues
The Red Sox and Rays wrap up their series on Sunday, July 9 at 1 p.m.
The pitching matchup is Boston’s David Price against Tampa’s Chris Archer.
Following the game the Red Sox and the rest of Major League Baseball will be off for the All-Star break.
