Red Sox Manage Only 5 Hits, Fall to Rays 4-1
Monday, September 11, 2017
Boston had scored a combined 18 runs over their last two games against the Rays.
Reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Rick Porcello picked up his league leading 17th loss of the season, giving up five hits in five innings.
The Red Sox fall to 81-62 on the season. They now have a 3.5 game lead over the Yankees in the AL East.
Red Sox Offense Struggles
Boston's Christian Vazquez put the Red Sox on the board with an RBI single in the second inning to give the Red Sox an early 1-0 lead. However, they would only record four more hits the rest of the game.
Still leading 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Tampa’s Wilson Ramos and Evan Longoria each hit an RBI single to give the Rays a 2-1 lead.
The Rays would add to their lead in the sixth when Ramos hit a home run just over the center field wall to make it 3-1 and Lucas Duda hit a home run in the seventh to make it 4-1 Rays.
The Red Sox have scored two runs or fewer 18 times in 30 starts with Porcello on the mound.
Tampa Bay pitcher Alex Cobb gave up one run on four hits and three walks over five innings of action.
