The win improves the Red Sox to 84-63 on the season. They maintain a three-game lead over the Yankees for first place in the AL East.
Red Sox Offense Comes Alive in 15th
With the game tied at six, Tampa Bay pitcher Austin Pruitt walked Jackie Bradley Jr. to lead off the top of the 15th inning.
Xander Bogaerts followed with a single. Dustin Pedroia hit a ground ball that was misplayed by Tampa Bay second baseman Brad Miller, allowing Bradley to score the lead run to put the Red Sox up 7-6.
Andrew Benintendi, Mitch Moreland, Deven Marraro and Bogaerts all drove in extra runs for the Red Sox to give them a 13-6 lead.
The Red Sox trailed the Rays 5-2 in the bottom of the 9th before rallying to tie the game at five and send the game to extra innings.
Boston took a 6-5 lead in the 14th inning, but Tampa’s Kevin Kiermaier led off the bottom of the inning with a home run off Red Sox pitcher Workman to regain a 6-6 tie for the Rays.
Series Continues
The Red Sox and Rays continue their series on Saturday, September 16 at 6:30 p.m.
