Red Sox Report: Buchholz a Playoff Possibility?
Wednesday, August 03, 2011
It took a while for the Red Sox to get to the bottom of it, but they confirmed Tuesday that Clay Buchholz does, indeed, have a stress fracture in his lower back.
Red Sox manager Terry Francona made the announcement earlier today. He surprised the media when he said that a return this season has not been ruled out for Buchholz.
The good news is that surgery will not be required for Buchholz who is on a 5-step structured rehab program which Francona says “will progress as his symptoms allow.”
Buchholz indicated that a best-case scenario may involve a return just in time for the postseason. “If there’s a timetable, I think the postseason is where I’d want to come back,” he said.
Both Buchholz and Francona made it clear that they did not want him to return until he is 100% healthy and not in danger of aggravating the injury again.
-Erik Bedard joined his new teammates in Boston for the first time since being traded by Seattle. Bedard seemed thrilled to be here going from worst to first. The Mariners are in last place in the AL West while the Sox currently lead the way in the AL East. “You play this game to be in a playoff, to play in a World Series and win a World Series. So it’s a great opportunity and I’m going to do the best I can,” he said.
-One night after leaving the game due to dizziness, shortstop Marco Scutaro was given the night off. Scutaro seems fine and tests after the game last night were negative.
-Tim Wakefield will make another bid at career win #200 when he takes the mound Wednesday night at Fenway against the Tribe.
-The Red Sox and Indians had to wait out a 90-minute rain delay before they started Tuesday night’s game.
