Report: Valentine Will Be Red Sox New Manager
Wednesday, November 30, 2011
ESPN Boston's Gordon Edes is reporting that a source close to the team is saying that Bobby Valentine will be the new manager of the Boston Red Sox.
Boston's managerial search had been whittled down to a final two candidates, Valentine and Gene Lamont.
With baseball's winter meetings slated for next week in Dallas, Texas, the feeling is that the club wanted to have a new manager in place by week's end. That will apparently be the case.
Valentine has been working as an analyst for ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball is apparently attending a charity event in Japan where he once managed. He is expected back in town late Wednesday night meaning an introductory press conference could not take place until Thursday at the earliest.
It is widely believed that the choice of Valentine was not that of new GM Ben Cherrington, but rather team President Larry Lucchino.
Valentine is known as a no nonsense type of manager meaning that the days of drinking beer and eating fried chicken in the clubhouse are surely over with. He managed the New York Mets from 1996-2002.
There has been some speculation that Boston may view Valentine as a temporary manager until Toronto Blue Jays manager John Farrell becomes available.
Farrell is well respected amongst Boston brass for the great job that he did as Boston's pitching coach a few yars ago. He has two years remaining on his contract with Toronto which runs through the 2013 season.
