Revs Run Over In LA, Drop 6th Straight

Thursday, July 17, 2014

The New England Revolution have lost their sixth-straight game falling 5-1 to the Los Angeles Galaxy on Wednesday night. The sixth-straight loss marks the first time the Revs have lost six straight since 2001.

The Revs got the first chance of the game, and it was created by Lee Nguyen in the 8th minute. Nguyen played a quick ball on a restart from a foul through to Teal Bunbury. Bunbury made a nice chip over Galaxy goalkeeper Jamie Penedo but the ball was cleared off the line by the Galaxy.

The Galaxy answered right back, however, and got the go-ahead goal in the 10th minute. The goal came off the foot of Robbie Keane on a terrific goal from outside of the box. The Keane blast went to the far corner and over the head of Bobby Shuttleworth, making it 1-0. The Galaxy goal marked the 6th consecutive game that the Revolution conceded the first goal.

The Revs nearly answered in the 12th minute on a great set piece delivery from Chris Tierney. Tierney put the delivery near the Galaxy net and in the direction of Bunbury. Bunbury extended a foot but was unable to direct the ball towards the net and sailed it over for a goal kick.

The Galaxy then too over the pace of play and nearly found a 2-0 lead, but Bobby Shuttleworth made a terrific save on Gyasi Zardes. Zardes shook off Andrew Farrell to get the one-on-one situation before the Shuttleworth save. The Galaxy were not done though. Just three minutes later they got the 2-0 lead off the foot of Zardes. The play developed when the Revolution appeared to be expecting a whistle. The Whistle never came and Zardes got the ball at his feet and beat Shuttleworth low for the 2-0 lead.

Things went from bad to worse for the Revolution in the 29th minute when A.J. Soares was shown a red card and ejected from the game. Soares made a challenge on Juninho but hit him in the knee with his cleats up and was shown straight red, leaving the Revs down a man and down two goals.

Fortunes seemed to start to turn for the Revs in the 36th minute, and it started with a good run and pass by Diego Fagundez. Fagundez put a beautiful ball into the box for Teal Bunbury when Dan Gargan brought down Bunbury from behind and was shown a red card. The red card not only evened the game at 10-men per side, but gave the Revolution a penalty kick opportunity. Lee Nguyen was back at the penalty spot, after Chris Tierney was denied in his lone attempt while Nguyen was suspended. Nguyen was three-for-three on penalties and buried his fourth to bring the Revolution within a goal.

The Revs appeared to have far better control the rest of the half, but did not create any more good chances. At the half the Revs trailed 2-1. The Galaxy out-shot the Revolution six to three in the 1st half with a four to two advantage in shots on target. The Galaxy also held the advantage in possession 59.6% to 40.4%.

The 2nd half did not start the way the Revolution wanted as they found themselves on the wrong end of another Gyasi Zardes goal in the 51st minute. Revolution play-by-play broadcaster put it perfectly as he said, "That didn't take long," just moments after the goal was scored. The goal came off a strong, low cross by Robbie Keane as Zardes beat Darrius Barnes to the front of the net to make it 3-1 Galaxy.

The Revs nearly pulled back within one in the 60th minute on a great feed from Kelyn Rowe. Rowe made a good, low cross into the box where substitute Jerry Bengtson made a play for the ball, but Jamie Penedo made the diving save as Bengtson made the play for the ball.

The Galaxy added to their lead in the 75th minute when they were awarded a free kick following a Jerry Bengtson foul just outside the box. Stefan Ishizaki took the free kick which deflected off the wall and past Bobby Shuttleworth to make it 4-1. Just three minutes later the Galaxy added another goal, once again off the foot of Robbie Keane. Keane made a run up the middle of the field after intercepting a Steve Neumann back-pass. Keane then got by Bobby Shuttleworth, who was off his line, and Keane tapped in an easy open-net goal to make it 5-1.

The Revs created a few chances before full time, but none found the net and the Revs fell 5-1. The game ended with both teams taking 11 shots, but the Galaxy carried a nine to two advantage in shots on target. The Galaxy also carried a 53.9% to 46.1% advantage in possession.

With the loss the Revolution fall to 7-9-2 with 23 points. The Revolution will get no chance to rest before taking the pitch again, as they will travel to Dallas to take on FC Dallas on Saturday.
