Rhode Islanders with Their Name on the Stanley Cup

Thursday, June 16, 2011

The Stanley Cup is engraved with the names of all the players on each winning team. A permenant tribute to their excellence. Who are the Rhode Islander with their name on the Cup?

According to the GoLocalProv sports reasearch staff there are four Rhode Islanders with their name on the Stanley Cup. Each with a different story and connection. We did not include Providence Reds nor do we have Providence Bruins grads who caught a piece of history last night.

Here are the Rhode Island Stanley Cup immortals:

Chris Terreri, Warwick, RI

Born, breed, and a college star in Rhode Island - Chris grew up in the youth hockey programs in Rhode Island. He attended Providence College and led them to an NCAA finals - losing 2-1 to RPI in the 1985 finals.

He was drafted by the New Jersey Devils and helped them win the Cup - not once, but twice in 1995 and in 2000.

During his career he played for the Devils, the San Jose Sharks, Chicago Blackhawks and New York Islanders.

Today, Chirs is the goaltending coach of the Devils under head coach Larry Robinson.

Mathieu Schneider, Mount Saint Charles Academy, Woonsocket, RI

Scheider's family moved to Woonsocket for his high school years and he helped Mount win three State Championships. He left after his junior year at Mount to play juniors hockey.

Drafted in the third round of the 1987 NHL Draft by the Canadiens. Schneider brioke into the NHL full-time in the 1990–91 season and he won the 1993 Stanley Cup with the Canadiens. The Canadians win over Wayne Gretzky and the Los Angeles Kings in five games put Schneider's name on the Cup and Mount's legacy in NHL history. In 1993-1994, he led all NHL defensemen in points with 52.

He also played for 10 tens over 20 years in the NHL.

John Muckler, Lincoln, RI

John Muckler was a minor league hockey player for years, but when he hit the NHL as a coach and executive he showed his skills. Muckler served briefly as head coach of the Minnesota North Stars in 1968–69, and was The Sporting News  top coach in minor-league hockey in 1979.

But it was with the great Oilers teams the Muckler got his name on the Cup. Muckler served as an assistant coach with the Stanley Cup winners in 1984 and 1985 and was designated co-coach during the 1987 and 1988 championship seasons.

In 1989, head coach/general manager Glen Sather stepped down and Muckler was promoted to head coach and led the club to its fifth Stanley Cup in seven years in 1990.

Muckler last worked in the NHL as a head coach for the New York Rangers, 1997 to 2000. Muckler was hired as a Senior Advisor with the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes in September 2008.

Lou Lamoriello, Providence, Rhode Island

Lamoriello attended LaSalle Academy, graduated from Providence College where he played both baseball and hockey, and then coached hockey and served as AD at PC.

In 1983, he left to run the New Jersey Devils and has proven to be one of the most successful GM's in sports history. His Devils have appeared in the Stanley Cup finals in 1995 (won), 2000 (won), 2001 (lost), and 2003 (won).

Three times on the Cup. A LaSalle hall of famer and a Rhode Islander hall of famer.

Did GoLocalProv miss anyone?
