Rhody Better Than PC? Not Today.
Sunday, December 05, 2010
How do you like your humble pie? I like mine warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. I assume that Friar fans will be looking to get me some soon.
I am certainly not shocked that PC defeated Rhody yesterday at the Dunk, but I am mildly surprised. I thought that URI was the better team and maybe they are. But they certainly were not on Saturday.
The Friars led most of the way against URI and they didn’t just beat the Rams, they destroyed them. The final score was 87-74 but it really wasn’t as close as that score indicates.
Providence won the battle in just about every statistical category. The Friars held the Rams to just 39% from the field while forcing 14 URI turnovers. Meanwhile, PC shot 48% from the field in Saturday’s game with 17 assists on their 28 field goals. Providence also turned it over 3 fewer times than Rhody.
Want more? The Friars won the battle of the boards out-rebounding the Rams 39-33. They also blocked 10 URI shots, 6 of those were courtesy of Bilal Dixon.
If you had asked me who the tougher and more talented team was before Saturday’s game, I would have said URI. Not after the game.
Marshon Brooks nearly had a double-double. He led PC with 26 points and 9 rebounds. Teammate Vincent Council did register a double-double with 17 points and 10 assists. Council nearly had a triple-double finishing with 7 rebounds as well.
As expected, Delroy James led URI with 25 points.
With the win PC improves to (8-1) on the season. The Friars host Brown Monday night at 7pm.
URI falls to (5-3). The Rams travel to Boston to battle Northeastern Wednesday night.
