Back to school means back to the athletic fields…and that’s precisely what’s happening at Rhode Island’s nine intercollegiate programs.

As we re-launch our weekly college notes update for the 2011-12 school year, we’ll start up with a general overview of current athletic activities going on around local campuses. Send your stories, news events and ideas to [email protected]:

Providence College:

The Friar women's cross country team enters the 2011 campaign ranked third in the nation, according to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association preseason poll released Tuesday, August 30th. On the men's side, the Friars will enter the season 18th in the country. Both teams return all of their top runners from last season…field hockey is underway, with the Friars dropping a 4-0 decision to Northeastern in their opener on August 30th…women’s soccer started the season with three straight ties, before hosting Holy Cross on Wednesday in the home opener…men’s soccer earned its first win of the year with a 2-1 win at Quinnipiac this past Monday. The Friars are 1-1, and face crosstown rival Brown today in the Ocean State Cup…

University of Rhode Island:

URI freshman soccer player Matt Sykes has been named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, announced on Tuesday. Sykes becomes the first Ram to earn the award since Thomas Lindroos did so in 2009. The Rams are 1-2 to start the season, and play at Bryant this afternoon at 3:00 pm…Warwick’s Stephanie Santos was named Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week, announced Wednesday by the conference office. The senior forward tallied two goals in a 1-0-1 week for the Rams (prior to Thursday’s game at Stony Brook). Santos scored the game-tying goal in a 1-1 double overtime tie at Vermont in the season opener on Aug. 23…women’s volleyball is off to a 2-1 start to the season, splitting matches with St. Francis (PA) and Pittsburgh at the Pitt Panther Invitational last weekend. Next up, Iona at the Stony Brook Holiday Inn Express Tournament this weekend…the football team held its annual media/photo day Tuesday afternoon at Meade Stadium where it unveiled its new uniforms for the upcoming 2011 season. The home uniform is complete with a navy jersey and pants with the numbers outlined in Keaney Blue with white trim and RI letters in Keaney Blue at the neck. The road jerseys are white with navy numbers outlined in Keaney Blue and navy RI letters at the neck. URI will debut its new jerseys on Sept. 10 when it travels to Syracuse to take on the Orange…

Brown:

Brown’s men’s soccer team is pre-season ranked #11 nationally, as they open their season today against PC. Second-year head coach Patrick Laughlin expects his 2011 soccer team to continue its upward trend and contend in the upper echelon of the Ivy League and make another run in the NCAA Tournament with the return of 20 letter winners from last year's squad, including eight starters and eight senior veterans…Brown men's basketball assistant coach (and Pawtucket native) TJ Sorrentine has been promoted to Associate Head Coach in an announcement made by Bears' head coach Jesse Agel. Sorrentine, who is instrumental in the Brown's recruiting efforts and on-court player development, has been an assistant coach for the Bears for the last three years…three women’s squads open their seasons today (and this weekend) as well. Field hockey opens their season today at New Hampshire, women’s soccer opens at Liberty University and volleyball opens at the Sacred Heart Invitational…

Bryant:

Field hockey opened its season with a 7-1 loss to Delaware, even though the Bulldogs scored their first goal less than two minutes into the game…volleyball opened its season with a win over UMKC, a loss to Hartford and a loss to Army at the West Point Invitational last weekend. They play in Denver, CO today against Air Force and Denver…senior captain Jazmin Stoner and junior Macy Mitrovich were named to the West Point Invitational all-tournament team…men’s soccer opens its season today, at home vs. URI at 3:30 pm. The women are 0-1-1 so far, and play Manhattan this afternoon at 12:00 pm…football opens the 2011 season at Maine on Saturday at 5:00 pm…

CCRI:

The CCRI women’s soccer team had its season opening trip to Maryland cancelled due to Hurricane Irene’s visit this past weekend. They’ll finally open up Saturday against Manchester CC (CT) at home at 1:00 pm…men’s soccer opens its season on September 10th, men’s and women’s cross country begin September 17th, and volleyball this weekend is at the Dragon Invitational…

Rhode Island College:

RIC’s men’s soccer team is picked to finish 3rd in the pre-season Little East Conference poll…under the leadership of head coach John Mello, Rhode Island College will be in the hunt for the program’s first conference regular season crown after placing second three times, most recently in 2008. The Anchormen registered an overall record of 10-7-2 and reached the Little East Championship match as the No. 3 seed. It was the second time in three years that RIC competed in the title contest…women’s soccer opens tonight at Wheelock College, and opens at home against Thomas College Saturday at 2:00 pm…men’s and women’s cross country open on September 17th…women’s tennis opened Thursday against Curry College, and plays Saturday at Roger Williams…volleyball opened Thursday at home against Wheaton…RIC has named Matt Holt as an assistant men’s basketball coach. He will assist head coach Bob Walsh and current assistant Chris Burns in all phases of the program including, recruiting, scouting, administering practice and game coaching…

Roger Williams University:

This past week, student-athletes from the Roger Williams University Athletic Department took a little time out of their weekend to assist the incoming freshmen with moving in to their new dorms…women's tennis has been selected to finish second in the Commonwealth Coast Conference this year. Voting for the preseason poll was conducted among the league's head women's tennis coaches…Sailing World has released its collegiate sailing preseason poll, and the RWU sailing team finds itself placed third in the nation according to the rankings…Dave Kemmy was officially named as Director of Athletics, Intramurals and Recreation this month, two academic years after his appointment as acting athletic director for the University…

Salve Regina University:

The Salve Regina University football team earned a third place ranking in the New England Football Conference (NEFC) Boyd Division per the results of the 2011 NEFC Preseason Coaches Poll…the Seahawks open their season Saturday at 1:00 pm, hosting the Union College Dutchmen at Gaudet Field in Middletown…volleyball, women’s soccer and field hockey all opened their seasons Thursday, field hockey beating Wheelock 4-1, volleyball beat Babson 3-1 and soccer lost at WPI 4-2…men’s soccer begins later today (Friday) at the Southern Maine Fall Classic…

Johnson & Wales:

Executive Director of Athletics John Parente has been named the 2011 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Executive of the Year, announced by the conference office at the annual meetings last week. Under Parente’s leadership, the Wildcats captured the GNAC Commissioner’s cup on both the men’s and women’s side after winning four conference championships (men’s and women’s cross country, women’s volleyball and men’s basketball) during the 2010-11 season. The Wildcats boasted three All-Americans this past year, a first for the University…the University has named Scott Reslow interim head women’s volleyball coach, replacing Jamie Marcoux, the Associate Athletic Director at JWU. Marcoux guided the Wildcats to five NCAA appearances and over 300 wins during her illustrious career with the Wildcats…
