Scott Cordischi On Sports: Dolphin Disgrace & A New Twist to OT

Thursday, January 06, 2011

With the end of the NFL’s regular season last weekend, the silly season is now underway. It is that time of year where many struggling franchises fires their head coaches and replace them with new ones.

Surprisingly, more teams that were thought to be changing head coaches did not.

Tom Coughlin will remain with the NY Giants. Same for Gary Kubiak in Houston. Jack Del Rio was thought to be on thin ice in Jacksonville but he’s safe. That also appeared to be the case in Cincinnati where the Bengals not only didn’t fire Marvin Lewis, they extended his contract.

Let’s also not forget that Minnesota removed the interim label from Leslie Frasier’s head coaching tag and the feeling is that Dallas may do the same with Jason Garrett.

That leaves Carolina, Cleveland, Oakland and Denver in the market for new head coaches at the moment. Miami may be another given the horrendous way they are handling their current head coach Tony Sporano.

Sporano has been left in limbo while the Dolphins openly court coaches like Bill Cowher and Jim Harbaugh. The fact that they are talking to those two men is obviously an indication that they are not happy with Sporano. So why not just fire the guy and be done with it?

If Cowher and Harbaugh decide they don’t want to coach in Miami, then what? Does Stephen Ross then tell Sporano that he can hang around for another year?

The shame of it all is that Sporano doesn’t have the resume’ just to tell Ross to stick it where the sun doesn’t shine. While he hasn’t done a bad job in his 3 seasons in Miami, it is unlikely that he would get another head coaching job in the league if he simply walked away.

Regardless of whether you are a Miami Dolphins or Tony Sporano fan, you would have to agree that the man deserves better treatment than what he is currently receiving from his employer.

-The Patriots will put a limited number of tickets on sale at noon tomorrow for their divisional playoff game at Gillette Stadium on January 16th. There will be a limit of 6 tickets per customer and they can only be purchased by calling (800)-745-3000 or by going to www.ticketmaster.com.

-With all of the injuries starting to catch up to the Celtics, remember that it is most important that they be healthy for the playoffs which are still a few months away.

-The 2011 PGA Tour tees off tonight in Maui. While Tiger Woods will not be playing this weekend, don’t be surprised if he has a big year in 2011 returning to the winners circle on more than one occasion.

-How does Bert Blyleven get into the Hall of Fame after not getting enough votes in his previous 13 years on the ballot? Did his numbers somehow get better by not playing?

-In all due respect to Blyleven, whom I believe was very good and not great, it should be Jack Morris who got in because he was a great pitcher in his day.

-Roberto Alomar deserves to be in Cooperstown.

-PC needs to get tougher and better defensively if they are going to win in the Big East.

-Brett Favre may have only spent one season with the NY Jets, but it was certainly a memorable one for many of the female employees of the organization.

-For all of the complaining about the Boston Bruins inconsistent play this season, they’re still in first place in the Northeast Division.

-Don’t be surprised if Miami Hurricanes offensive coordinator Mark Whipple winds up back in the NFL in Bill Cowher returns to coaching.

-The Big East has 8 teams in the top 25 this week, in case you were wondering.

-And don’t be shocked if St. John’s becomes the 9th team in the top 25 after their (3-0) start in conference play and an RPI of 6.

-The Ivy League has a conference RPI of 14 and a strength of schedule higher than the Big 12.

-Bill Buckner is returning to Massachusetts to manage the Brockton Rox of the independent Can-Am League.

-Rich Rodriguez’s firing at Michigan after just 3 seasons is another example of the grass not always being greener on the other side.

-There was a KG sighting at Celtics practice this week as Garnett was shooting jump shots. No word on when he will be able to return to the line-up.

-And don’t forget about the new playoff overtime rules for the NFL starting this weekend. Each team will get a possession in overtime unless the team the receiving team scores a touchdown on its opening drive. If they kick a field goal, the opposing team will get a possession after which it will be sudden death.
