Scott Cordischi On Sports: Friars Suffer First Setback

Wednesday, November 24, 2010

Apparently the PC Friars won’t be going undefeated after all. The Friars played their first legitimate opponent Tuesday when they faced the LaSalle Explorers in Cancun, Mexico. Unfortunately for PC, they were never really in it as LaSalle cruised to the 84-73 win.

Marshon Brooks led the Friars with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Vincent Council chipped in with 17.

LaSalle pretty much did what they wanted to do against the PC defense by shooting 50% from the field and from “3”. The Explorers also dominated the glass outrebounding the Friars 47-31.

The loss drops PC to (4-1) on the season. The Friars meet Wyoming in their final game of the Cancun Challenge tonight at 7pm.

-Let me see if I have this right. The Red Sox rating dropped nearly 40% this past season and they just lost Victor Martinez to Detroit in free agency and probably won’t re-sign Adrian Beltre. And we’re supposed to take more interest in the 2011 Red Sox? Better make some big moves, Theo!

-UConn’s win over #2 Michigan State in Maui last night is another example of why it’s never a good idea to sleep on the Big East.

-In the court of public opinion, the Yankees are destroying their long-time shortstop Derek Jeter. Most members of the media that cover the team and Yankee fans agree that the organization has made a fair offer to the free agent and shouldn’t go any further.

-Let’s hope that the Patriots don’t fall victim to Thursday’s “trap game” in Detroit. It would take a little luster off of their Monday night match-up with the Jets in Foxboro the following week.

-The 2010 Jets remind me an awful lot of some of the Patriots championship teams from last decade. They are getting a lot of lucky breaks and are making the most of those opportunities.

-The Miami Heat was supposed to be the greatest thing since sliced bread. Now they’re just (8-6) through their first 14 games. So much for the hype!

-I’m starting to feel the same way about Penn State’s Joe Paterno as I do about Brett Favre. Enough is enough. Time to call it a career.

-More food is consumed by Americans on Thanksgiving Day than any other single day of the year. What’s the second highest food-consumption day each year in the US? Super Bowl Sunday.

-Unless you’re from New England, chances are that the tradition of high school football on Thanksgiving morning is foreign to you.

-Many say that Peyton Manning’s interception on the Colts’ final drive Sunday is further proof that Belichick should not have gone for it on 4th and 2 last year in Indianapolis. I completely disagree. Like it or not, Belichick makes his decisions based on one thing: what gives his team the best chance to win. He obviously thought that the offense’s chance of picking up that first down last year was better than his defense stopping Manning and the Colts from driving the length of the field for a score. That’s enough for me.

-Brown football coach Phil Estes has had 10 winning seasons in Ivy League play in his 13 years as head coach of the Bears. He has also led the program to 3 Ivy Championships. Still, this may have been his best coaching job ever leading the Bears to a (5-2) league mark and a second place finish despite a rash of injuries to key players throughout the year.

-Only people in Pittsburgh objected to Richard Seymoure’s hand to the face of Steeler’s QB Ben Roethlisberger. Everyone else loved it!

-In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we’ll give Titans’ QB Vince Young our “Turkey of the Week” award.
