Scott Cordischi On Sports: Pats-Colts Sports Best Rivalry

Thursday, November 18, 2010

The Patriots win over the Steelers Sunday night was certainly a big moment in what looks to be another playoff-bound season for the Pats. And while we bask in the glory over this victory over the rival Steelers, it pales in comparison to Sunday’s game against Indianapolis.

There are few great rivalries in all of sports and Patriots-Colts has certainly become a huge one in recent years. In fact, over the last decade, one might argue that it is the best rivalry in all of sports.

Think about it. It has all of the components like two great franchises that have dominated their league. There’s two future hall of fame quarterbacks in Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. Their regular season and playoff games have been absolute classics.

We were very lucky to see Bird and Magic square off in the 80’s when the Celtics and the Lakers were on top of the NBA. We should also appreciate each Patriots-Colts match-up featuring Brady and Manning because who knows how much longer this will last?

-It may be early, but both the Celtics and the Bruins have been fun to watch and give us hope for another great spring when the NBA and NHL playoffs roll around again.

-Speaking of the Bruins, Tim Thomas has been ridiculously outstanding thus far. Tuukka Rask was supposed to be the team’s #1 goaltender coming into the season but Thomas has been “standing on his head,” to use a hockey phrase.

-Will Tom Brady be as fired up for Sunday’s game against the Colts as he was in Pittsburgh?

-The URI men’s basketball team will be very good again this year because they have a number of players who can shoot the “3” and a guy like Delroy James who can slash to the basket. When Orion Outerbridge returns for the second semester, that will help their inside game as well.

-Congrats to old colleague Andy Gresh who got married over the weekend to Betsey Hall. Hall’s father, Bob Hall, was one of the greatest football players and all around athletes ever to attend Brown University. He also happens to be one of the nicest people you’ll ever want to meet.

-Northwestern and Illinois will play a college football game at Wrigley Field in Chicago this weekend. While the atmosphere will be great, I wouldn’t want to be a receiver trying to catch a pass in the back of the east end zone. The right field wall is only a couple of feet away from the end zone.

-I used to take for granted the fact that Syracuse football played in a bowl game every year. Now I celebrate their bowl eligibility for the first time in six years.

-Paul Pierce’s tweet last week saying, “it was a pleasure to bring my talents to South Beach,” when the Celtics beat the Heat was an instant classic!

-Speaking of Twitter, apparently Tiger Woods decided to tweet yesterday for the first time in over a year. After his tweet which read, “What’s up everyone? Finally decided to try out twitter,” he received more than 200 followers per minute and was up to 30,000 new followers in just a few hours.

-Logan Mankins’ immediate insertion into the Pats starting line-up a couple of weeks ago is an indication that Belichick, Kraft and the Patriots organization a.) do not hold a grudge and b.) will always play the players they believe give the team the best chance to win.

-The Brown basketball team’s season-opening upset win at Fordham was both exciting and well-deserved for the Bears.

-Speaking of Brown, head football coach Phil Estes has won 3 of the school’s 4 Ivy League titles, but this may be his best coaching job ever with all of the key injuries the program has had to endure this year.

-That only 3,521 people showed up to the PC men’s basketball game against Yale at the Dunk the other night is an indication of two things: 1.) with the economy still struggling, people are being more discretionary when it comes to how they spend their entertainment dollars and 2.) the Friars have been down for so long that they are going to have to win a lot of basketball games to get the casual fans back.

-The Brady vs. Manning debate has always been a great one but it is Brady’s performance in the clutch and on the big stage (i.e. the playoffs and the Super Bowl) that gives him the edge in my mind.
