Scott Cordischi On Sports: PC To Fire Davis
Thursday, March 10, 2011
The worst kept secret is about to be made official when PC Athletic Director Bob Driscoll returns from the Big Apple. When he does return in the next day or two, he is expected to officially fire men's basketball coach Keno Davis.
This news comes as no surpise. It was written here weeks ago that this was, most likely where PC was headed. Yesterday, we comfirmed that it is a fait accompli. It will happen any day, perhaps any hour now.
The decision to fire a head coach is never an easy one. Beyond the financial considerations and the human element involved, it is also an admission by Driscoll that he made a mistake.
What's baffling in Davis' case is the fact that the who world could see how horrible his team was defensively yet he refused to acknowledge it this season. Even worse, his continuous positive spin on how things were going and the effort his team was putting in each night became insulting to our intelligence.
Make no mistake about it, Keno Davis is a nice man. That's also what makes this so difficult. No one wants to see a good person lose his job. And no one wants to wants to insult a good man. That's not neccessary.
But Davis' nice demeanor may have also led to his downfall at PC in that he may have been too nice to his players. Sometimes fear equates to respect and you have to wonder if any of the PC players feared their head coach. That won't matter pretty soon because Davis will be out the door.
-Tom Brady with a pony tail in Brazil? What happened to the young kid out of Michigan with a buzz cut who used to eat, sleep and breathe football in Foxboro?
-With very few exceptions, why is it that the Bruins can't seem to beat Montreal?
-I love how Heat coach Eric Spoelstra tried to deny that his players were crying in the locker room after a loss less than 24 hours after telling the media that exact thing. Did he realize that his words were caught on tape?
-Some say that URI is already in the NIT, I say they may need to beat Richmond tomorrow to solidify their spot.
-Havard vs. Princeton for the Ivy League men's basketball championship at Yale this Saturday should be a heck of a game. I'll take the Crimson to win their first-ever Ivy title.
-What's with all of the injuries to the Celtics this year? Is it something in the water?
-Then again, at least they don't cry when they lose.
-Of course, the Celtics know hiw to win close games which is something the Heat does not know how to do.
-While I would love for my Syracuse Orange to win the Big East Championship, I'm more concerned with how they do next week when the real Tournament begins.
-We can defend Zdeno Chara all we want to but if that was Matt Cooke laying the same type of hit on a Bruins player we would be calling for his head right now.
-I still say that the Bachelor picks the cute blond from North Carolina.
-Although the brunette from Seattle comes from money and, as our old friend Pete Gillen used to say, "marry for money, love will come later!"
