Summer is finally here!  It officially arrived on Monday.  It’s time for baseball, hot dogs, apple pie, Hurd Chevrolet.  Oops!  I got a little caught up in the jingle there for a moment.  But it is time for our sporting focus to shift almost exclusively to baseball which, in these parts, can be interesting.

Rhode Island is a unique baseball state in that it is comprised of many Red Sox and Yankee fans.  It makes for interesting and debate filled summers as people go back and forth about this great rivalry.

What’s nice this year is that the Red Sox have pulled themselves back into the division race.  Exactly one month ago, Boston trailed division-leading Tampa by 8 ½  games in the AL East.  Heading into last night’s action the Sox were tied with Tampa a mere ½  game behind the first place Yankees.  If anything, the Red Sox should have taught us a lesson to never write a team off so early in the season.  It should be an interesting few months.

-Was Bill Belichick coaching Portugal during their 7-0 World Cup trouncing of North Korea?

-Word is that the Bruins favor left winger Taylor Hall over center Tyler Seguin in this weekend’s NHL draft.  Edmonton holds the #1 overall pick and has remained quiet as to their preference.  Boston picks second.

-Doc Rivers won’t say what his intentions are regarding next season but it sure seems like he’s not going to be on the Celtics bench.

-You know things are going well for the Sox when Daniel Nava is playing a key role in their success.

-The 12thannual CVS/Caremark Charity Classic takes place Monday and Tuesday at Rhode Island Country Club.  It is a must see if you are a golf fan in southern New England.

-Some people at Providence College believe that we have not seen the last of teams changing conference affiliations in college sports just yet.

-Kobe Bryant may be the closest thing we’ve seen to Michael Jordan but he’s still no Michael.

-I said it before and I’ll say it again.  I’m proud of how the Boston Celtics played in the post season.

-What are the odds that Tiger Woods goes the entire season without winning an event?

-I don’t know why Red Sox fans were worried so much about whether to cheer or boo Manny Ramirez.  He certainly didn’t seem to care.

-Roger Federer almost got knocked out of Wimbledon in the first round.  Now that would have been a major upset.

-The New England Patriots are going to wear their throwback uniforms against Minnesota on Halloween this year.  They will be wearing uniforms from their 1985 AFC Championship season which are among the best in franchise history.

-Why the New Orleans Hornets would even consider trading Chris Paul is beyond me.

-I’m guessing that Syracuse and UConn join the Big 10 at some point sooner or later.

-Why does it seem that officiating in all sports plays a much bigger role in the outcomes of games than ever before?

-Celtics GM Danny Ainge has done very well in the NBA draft over the years and is equipped with the 19th  and 52nd  overall picks in tomorrow night’s draft.

-Don’t expect to see Tim Thomas in a Bruins uniform next season.

-Interleague play has lost a lot of its luster.  Even so, Red Sox – Dodgers sure beats the hell out of Red Sox – Royals.
