Season Comes to an End for St. John’s Boys Lacrosse

Saturday, June 15, 2013

St. John's season came to an end against Longmeadow in the state tournament.

The Central Division II boys lacrosse champion St. John's Pioneers had their season come to an end at the hands of the Western Mass champion Longmeadow High School, who defeated St. John's by a score of 15-6.

St. John's was looking to become the first Central Mass team to win a lacrosse state championship, but Longmeadow had other plans. Longmeadow, who is 24-0 on the season, won the state title in 2008 and showed that they are a force to be reckoned with, taking care of the Pioneers at Foley Stadium in Worcester, essentially a home game for St. John's. The Pioneers were led by senior Hunter Burdick, who will play at Nazareth College next year, tallying two goals and two assists in the loss.

Quite the run

St. John's finishes the season with an overall record of 19-4, but will finish the year with an undefeated record against Central Mass opponents, as the Pioneers earned the top seed in the Central Mass playoffs.

After defeating Algonquin, who were the two-time defending Central Mass champions, in the semifinals, St. John's completed its undefeated Central Mass run with an 11-10 thrilling overtime victory over second-seeded Grafton High School in the title game. The championship was the first that St. John's had won since the 2010 season.

Kevin Butler scored the title-clinching goal for the Pioneers just 22 seconds into the overtime period against Grafton. Josh Freilich, who was tied for tenth in Central Mass in scoring with 64 points this season, put on an impressive offensive display in the title game, scoring five goals to lead the Pioneers.
