So Long For Now, Red Sox!
Tuesday, April 12, 2011
Do we have to wait until Thursday for the Bruins-Canadiens series to begin? Because I need a break from this Red Sox team.
Less than two weeks into the season the 2011 Boston Red Sox have already provided us with more frustrating moments than many of their teams have over the course of an entire season this past decade.
And spare me all of the excuses because I’ve heard them all and I’m not buying any of them.
First it was the Texas Rangers who, without Cliff Lee, figured to be no match for the best team on paper. Instead it was the Red Sox who were the paper tigers as their top three starters got abused by Ranger hitters.
But after their 0-3 start we were told that a trip to Cleveland to take on the lowly Indians would be just what the doctor ordered. Not quite. The Indians, obviously energized by the few hundred fans who showed up to watch them play each night, swept the Red Sox as well. Oh well!
So they returned to Fenway where clearly some home cooking would do the trick. The problem is, the rival New York Yankees figured to be some stiff competition. Surprisingly, the Sox grabbed 2 out of 3 from New York leaving Red Sox Nation feeling pretty good about their team and the fact that the worst was now behind them.
Surely the 1-8 Tampa Bay Rays would provide the perfect opportunity for Boston to be the sweeper as opposed to the sweepee. Not quite! Diasuke Matsuzaka showed again why he was such a colossal waste of yen by getting hammered by a Rays offense without their best hitter in Evan Longoria and the Manny “The Juicer” Ramirez.
Last year the Red Sox were 11-15 one month into the season and 19-21 on May 17th. The good news is that most of use weren’t subjected to that torture because we were too preoccupied with the Bruins and Celtics, both of whom were making fun and exciting playoff runs.
If there’s a God in Heaven, or at least somewhere in New England, the Bruins and Celtics will give us another entertaining April and May this spring because we should not have to be subjected to this waterboarding-like torture that is the 2011 Red Sox season.
Drop the puck already! I can’t take it anymore!
