This Sports Fan Has A Lot To Be Thankful For
Thursday, November 24, 2011
I am a sports fan and it’s Thanksgiving. Here are some of the things I’m thankful for.
-I am thankful that the Patriots have won 3 Super Bowls over the last decade and are considered the model franchise in all of sports.
-I am thankful that the Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup and are relevant again after too many years of apathy amongst the fans.
-I am thankful for high school football on Thanksgiving Day. If you’re not from New England, this is a tradition that you just don’t understand.
-I am thankful to be the voice of the Brown Bears. There is nothing more that I enjoy doing professionally that broadcasting Brown football and basketball games each year.
-I am thankful that it was the NFL and not the NBA that settled their labor dispute in time because I could not handle a lack of pro football during the fall and winter months.
-I am thankful that I am not one of “Jerry’s Kids,” as in Penn State monster Jerry Sandusky. No child should ever have to be subjected to the alleged horrors that he put those young boys through.
-I am thankful that Terry Francona is in a better place right now. He’s too good and too classy to still be in Boston with an ownership group that clearly no longer appreciates him.
-I am thankful for Bill Belichick being the Patriots coach. If Jim Caldwell were coaching the ’08 Pats, would they have won a single game, much less 11?
-I am thankful that Rex Ryan’s New York Jets are struggling. Ryan may not be as humorous when his team is down but I sure love reading the New York tabloids rip his Jets each week as they continue to lose.
-I am thankful for Ed Cooley being the new men’s basketball coach at PC. Even against a soft schedule, do you think that Keno Davis would have had this team off to a 4-0 start?
-I am thankful for “Felger & Massarotti” onBig East commissioner John Marinatto 98.5 The Sports Hub. Theirs is clearly the best show on all of sports radio in Boston.
-I am thankful for Mariano Rivera. That's right! This Red Sox fan truly appreciates Rivera's greatness and his class both on and off the field.
-I am thankful for old man Tim Thomas and young whippersnapper Tyler Seguin. Those two Bruins are damn good!
-I am thankful that I have nothing to do with the BCS because Lord knows how they will come up with a pairing for college football’s national championship game that will satisfy everyone.
-I am thankful that I am not in Big East commissioner John Marrinato’s shoes. With BYU now opting out of joining the conference, things are still a mess for the once powerful and now fragile Big East.
-I am thankful for 50” high-def TV’s because it makes watching sports so much better than it ever was before.
-I am thankful for Brown football coach Phil Estes who is not just a fantastic coach, but also a fantastic person and a true mentor to all of his players.
-I am thankful for my unlimited data plan which allows me to check pro, college and fantasy scores non-stop.
-I am thankful for the fact Red Sox games might end a little earlier next summer because Jonathan Papelbon won’t be taking 10 minutes in between pitches.
-I am thankful for the New York Yankees, Montreal Canadiens, Los Angeles Lakers and currently the New York Jets. Having bitter rivals makes rooting for your teams that much more enjoyable.
-I am thankful for the 80-100 people who join me every Wednesday night at Wicked Good Bar & Grill for “Trivia Night.” We have a lot fun each week.
-I am thankful for Mike Wall and Russ Tyler, two of the best color analysts in the business. They make my job easy and a heck of a lot of fun when calling Brown games.
-I am thankful for the Ryan Center, a great on-campus facility that provides a nice home court advantage for the Rhody Rams.
-I am thankful for all of the youth sports coaches who volunteer their time to help kids learn the fundamentals of sports and teach them things like sportsmanship.
-I am thankful for the Miami Dolphins for having a franchise in a tropical climate that I can visit each year to watch my Patriots kick some tail.
-I am thankful for fantasy football which has made me and millions of other people even more obsessed with the NFL in recent years.
I am thankful for many things. I am thankful for all of the brave men and women who serve our country both here and overseas to protect all of our freedoms. And, above all, I am thankful for family and friends.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
